Book Review: If You Dare by A.R. Torre

I never thought I’d become emotionally attached to a tiny little woman who was a psychopath that lived in apartment in 6E but with each book I’ve devoured I loved Deanna Madden more and more.

Deanna is a total bad-ass that has captivated my attention for word one and still has me reeling once the book is over and desperate for more. Starting in The Girl in 6E, Deanna is a webcam girl that has made her quite a bit of money as she lives her life without leaving her apartment afraid that if she leaves or anyone enters she will kill them.  To keep her urges at bay Deanna has set three rules for herself.

  1. Don’t leave the apartment. Not in case of fire, not to mail a letter, not to run an errand. The door stays shut, and I stay inside.
  2. Don’t get attached to clients. I take off my clothes, I stand in front of the camera, and I perform. What they want, I give. Their secrets, I keep. Everything I tell them, is a lie.
  3. Don’t kill anyone. I’ve obeyed that rule for over three years.

Deanna had been following those rules for three years living an isolated life that kept her and everyone else safe until one day she started breaking her rules.

Told mostly from Deanna’s point of view with a few others scattered throughout, If You Dare picks up a few months after Do Not Disturb with her boyfriend, Jeremy, wanting more from their relationship, causing Deanna’s progress to start to slip. Going from present to past and back again, I was once again eating up every word Torre wrote as I tried to fit the puzzle pieces together with Deanna.

Is it crazy that I love being inside Deanna’s head? Seeing the world through a lonely but  strong, captivating psychopath’s eyes as she plans and evolves throughout this series. Keeping me on the edge of my seat with suspense and never knowing what twist may come next. If you couldn’t already tell I LOVED this book and this author. It is one of her best yet!  I was on edge throughout the entire book knowing that the outcome would most likely be bittersweet, but I knew I would not be disappointed. Going by the authors note it looks like there will be more of Deanna and I can’t wait to see what will happen next in her journey.

You need to read this book! This whole series but know going in that you need to keep an open mind. Reviewing this series is so hard knowing how much I want to tell but won’t so that I don’t spoil it for other readers.

Alessandra Torre is one of my favorite authors. I love everything she writes and if I’m asked what book someone should read I ask if they’ve read Black Lies or The Girl in 6E. I can’t recommend them enough.  The author has her own unique writing style that will take you out of any preconceived notions of what you might like or not like and immerse you into her unique stories that you won’t be able to put her books down or stop talking about them. Alessandra Torre will captivate you will her spell-binding storytelling with unforgettable characters and stories.

** I received an arc for a fair and honest review. **
