There isn’t a more appropriate title for this book than Toxic. This is a second chance romance, but it’s not an easy romance that’s for sure. There was a lot of hurt, lies, and unknown between Phoebe and Jeremy. It was hard for me to decide on my rating on this book because the characters frustrated me so much. That being said though, their story still drew me in and took hold of me. When I had to put the book down, I was always thinking about it and wanting to get back to it. I needed for Jeremy and Phoebe to finally work things out.
I’m not a big fan of chapters going back and forth from the present to the past, but without it in this book we would be without knowing Phoebe and Jeremy’s first explosive romance in the Hamptons. It doesn’t continue throughout the whole book so if you’re not a fan then it shouldn’t be a problem and I felt in this instance it was needed.
Phoebe St. Claire has been left in charge of her family’s failing hotel chain and is doing everything that she can to not lose their legacy. After recently ending her engagement, she runs into someone she hasn’t seen in six long years. Him. The one who made her world crumble and fall apart. The one who made her find herself for the first time in her life only to for that young girl to lost herself again when he disappeared. All her feelings came rushing back and the only thing she knew was that she couldn’t lose herself in him again. But would she be successful?
Jeremy McQueen was not from Phoebe’s world when they first met. In fact, he hated her world and her father in particular. Now years later, he’s a successful businessman and has everything that he’s ever wanted. Except for her. Now with his sights set on Phoebe once again will they be able to move forward? Will they learn to trust one another or will their jealousies drag their relationship into the gutter? Can they put their past behind and forgive each other and themselves so that they can have a future together?
This is my first book by Kim Karr, although I have heard of her before. I just have too many books on my ever-growing TBR list, but when I was asked to read Toxic and read the synopsis I was immediately interested and couldn’t say no. That being said and I want to be honest with you, I had a hard time getting into the book at first. The format was not what I was used to and that most likely was due to it being an advanced readers copy. Then there was the back and forth between Jeremy and Phoebe. They could not seem to resolve their issues and more kept popping up.
Phoebe with her jealousy and doubts drove me crazy. I wanted her to be strong and the girl she was when she was with Jeremy the first time, but she definitely made it interesting. I was always waiting for more drama and the other shoe to drop throughout the whole story, and boy was there drama in this book.
In the end, all the loose strings were tied together and provided a very nice book. Very rarely are second chance romances without a lot of drama from the past and angst and I love second chance romances even with all the angst. If you’re looking for a second chance love story with some imperfect characters, drama, angst, and hot steamy sex then I think this book is for you.
** I was provided an arc for a fair and honest review. **
