Jennifer Stewart, a widow at the age of thirty-nine with a daughter off at college has decided to sell her house in Kansas, which she could no longer afford, and move to a small town in the mountains of Colorado. She studied journalism after her daughter; Bailey was born, worked her way through college, and then worked at a small paper after her daughter started school and has now landed a job at the Gunnison Gazette.
Four months after she moves, two women have been murdered and she wants to move from being the entertainment writer to editorial. Jenn decides to investigate the murders and hopefully find the killer before he strikes next with a few of her fellow townspeople. Unfortunately for her, the local Sheriff wants her stop her investigation.
Jack Gunnison, the local Sheriff, who’s over six feet tall with dark brown hair, crystal blue eyes, a rugged jaw, with broad chest and muscled arms. He’s dedicated to his job and hasn’t meet a woman yet who hadn’t tried to change his ways. Then he meets a sweet, innocent, but sassy woman who won’t stop nosing around in his investigation.
Jack continued trying to get the new town reporter to stop looking into the murders, but Jenn fights him every step of the way with her stubbornness and independence. They keep running into each other all over town and can’t deny they are drawn to one another.
Jack is an Alpha. He’s dominate, possessive, bossy, and sexy as hell. While Jenn is feisty and sweet. It all makes for great playful banter throughout the story between the two of them.
“I’m telling you right now; I’m not backing off; you intrigue the hell out of me with your smart mouth and sweetness, all at the same time. I haven’t met a woman in twenty years that’s piqued my interest like you have, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let you run from me because you’re stubborn.”
I really enjoyed this book and with the warning on Amazon saying that the author believes in soul mates and insta-love, proceed with caution if you’re not a romantic at heart, I was afraid they would fall in love obviously at first site. I am a true romantic at heart. Their relationship was fast but it really doesn’t come across that way in the book. The characters remark that they can’t believe it’s only been 36 hours or four days and so on, but it really seems longer to them and the reader.
You will be on the edge of your seat with the suspense in this story. I loved trying to figure out who the mysterious serial killer was and reading his creepy thoughts throughout the story. There are also lots of hot scenes between Jack and Jenn that will leave you panting. Even the epilogue will not leave you wanting.
I look forward to read more of C.P. Smith’s books. I’ve already bought the next book in the series, A Reason to Kill (Reason #2).
