Book Review: Among the Echoes by Aly Martinez

The beginning of this book is not an easy read, but if you can make it past it, you won’t be sorry.  This a phenomenal book.   How had I not heard of this series before now?  I started with this book after seeing it was on sale on Amazon for only $0.99.  It is the third book in this series but can be read as a standalone.  Trust me I am buy all of the books and reading them all.  I may not sleep for a few days because let me tell you I couldn’t put this book down.  I only slept for three hours, woke up got my son off to school and started to read it again. Shh don’t tell anyone, but I even snuck to read some of at work because I couldn’t stop reading it.  I even skipped meals and sleep, but it seemed like no time had passed.

Aly Martinez has now become one of my favorite authors.  This book isn’t like the normal romance books that you read.  You will be sucked into her story and she does an extraordinary job at writing such sensitive subject matter as sexual abuse, but also her wonderful story telling.

It starts off rough. Be prepared for it.  Erica witnesses a murder, held hostage, and then raped multiple times while bound to a bed.  This leaves her shattered.  Luckily, Leo James, an undercover DEA agent, was there to save her.  Next, the story moves to three years later where Erica/Riley and Leo/Dave are living the life of the witness protection program.  Erica is now a fragile, scared shell of the woman she once was until she meets her new next neighbor, Adam/Slate Andrews.

The first time Slate sees Riley he immediately wants to help her.  He can tell that something tragic has happened in her past. Circumstances bring them together and they become friends.  Erica slowly starts to open up as much as she can, trust someone new, and starts to become happy until she finds out who Slate really is. She knows she cannot have a relationship with him, but doesn’t want to give him up.  Slate isn’t willing to give her up.  How far will they go to protect each other?

“I want you. All of you. Not these little bits I hear echoing around the room. I just want you, Riley.”

This is a must read book.  It is raw, bold, and an emotional rollercoaster of a book.  I loved watching Erica find her inner strength again, happiness, hope, and most of all love after all these years.  You will fall in love with all the characters and I can’t wait to read Broken Course to read Leo’s story, but first I’m going to start at the beginning.  I recommend you start reading this series. Either here at Among the Echoes or at the beginning with Changing Course. Start anywhere but do read them.

“Fuck your fairytale.  I just want you.  I’ll make my own God damn happily ever after. But you’re the one who is mistaken.  You’ll be at the end of that story, beautiful.  You either come willingly or you force me into the dark after you.  It doesn’t matter to me, because either way, I’ll find you.”
